Text scanning reads everything. AI scanning reads what you asked for.

You write the instruction once. After that every scan is one tap, and the value you asked for is typed straight into the field you are already in — in the format you asked for.

Dense label

The instruction: “just the serial number”

A shipping label carrying five barcodes, two QR codes and a block of printed text. The field starts empty. One tap of the shutter, and the serial number alone lands in it.

An ordinary scanner makes you do two jobs it cannot do for you: decide which of the codes on this label you actually meant, and then deal with the raw payload it hands back. AI scanning takes in the whole label at once. Because the instruction says just the serial number, that is what comes out — not the carrier's tracking code, not the order number, not the payload of whichever barcode happened to be nearest the middle of the frame. One value, in the field, nothing else attached to it.

Vehicle VIN

The instruction: “the VIN”

A stamped VIN plate. One tap, and all 17 characters land in the field.

Every manufacturer does the VIN differently. Different fonts, different letter spacing, stamped into metal or printed on a sticker or etched into the windscreen, and never in the same place twice. That variety is exactly where conventional OCR struggles, because OCR is matching character shapes against shapes it already knows. AI scanning is reading the plate for meaning instead — it is looking for the thing that is a VIN, which is why an unfamiliar typeface or an awkward angle is not the end of the attempt.

Other things worth asking for

The instruction is just a sentence, so it can describe a format as easily as a value.

  • An expiry date, reformatted. Ask for it as YYYY-MM-DD and that is how it arrives, whichever way round the packaging printed it.
  • The invoice number out of a whole invoice. Point at the page, get the one field you need to key in.
  • The total off a receipt. The amount, without the VAT line, the subtotal or the change given.
  • Handwriting. A number written on a form or a job sheet, typed out for you.

How it works

  1. 1

    Write the instruction

Once, in the keyboard's settings. Not before every scan. Change it when the job changes.

  2. 2

    Point the camera

At the whole label, the whole plate, the whole page. You are not aiming at one code any more.

  3. 3

    Tap

About two seconds later the answer is typed into the field. It is a keyboard, so the answer goes into whatever you were already typing in — a web form, an ERP screen, a spreadsheet, a chat. There is nothing to integrate.

Where the photograph goes

AI scanning works by taking a photograph and sending it to a cloud AI service, which reads it and sends back the value. The picture of whatever you pointed the camera at leaves your phone. We think you should know that before you install, not afterwards.

Two consequences worth being clear about. AI scanning needs an internet connection, so it is not something you can rely on in a dead spot. And if you are pointing the camera at something confidential, the photograph of it goes to that service along with everything else in the frame.

Ordinary barcode and text scanning is a different thing and is unaffected: it runs on the device, and no image is sent anywhere.
